Vaasa Library

Vaasa City Library is built around the old Provincial Archives, enclosing the original building within the new library. The forms of the overall structure are heavily rooted in the proportions of old and new structures; each one complementing the other. The library also contains civic functions both open and hidden. The book halls open up to the park with their large glazed facade, whilst the multipurpose hall is locked within within the copper-plated sculpture-like extension.

Vaasa City Library is built around the old Provincial Archives, enclosing the original building within the new library. The forms of the overall structure are heavily rooted in the proportions of old and new structures; each one complementing the other. The original archive building is allowed to shine through the new extension, having been brought back to its former (and a new-found) glory. The distinction between the two different eras of building is obvious, yet seamless and coherent.

As is usual in Finland, the library takes on many of the cultural and civic functions for the region, rather than just being a place to borrow books. The library has a multi-purpose hall for civic meetings, performances or exhibitions – this is enclosed within a copper-plated extension, appearing as a sculpture in the park. The book halls open up to this park with their large glazed façade; the reading spaces becoming an extension of the public park.
