Tikkurila Tunnel
The Tikkurila railway station underpass is the latest completed component of a massive development of the city centre. The Tunnel combines public accessibility with art; transforming an otherwise purely functional space into a cultural and historical experience.
The entire length of the wall features an installation by artists Helena Hietanen and Jaakko Niemelä titled ‘Kartasto 1708/2018’; or ‘Map 1708/2018’. The perforated wall panels and graphical concrete on the ground represent the historic regional map that was originally drawn by Samuel Brotherus in 1708. Behind the 88 metre long walls of the tunnel, gently fluctuating lights shine star-chart-like patterns of 18th century urbanism throughout the underpass.
Not only an art piece, the tunnel functionally brings together all parts of the city's travel and commercial centre

02Full Profile
The Tikkurila railway station underpass is the latest completed component of a massive development of the city centre. The Tunnel combines public accessibility with art; transforming an otherwise purely functional space into a cultural and historical experience.
The entire length of the wall features an installation by artists Helena Hietanen and Jaakko Nimelä titled ‘Kartasto 1708/2018’; or ‘Map 1708/2018’. The perforated wall panels and graphical concrete on the ground represent the historic regional map that was originally drawn by Samuel Brotheruksen in 1708. Behind the 88 metre long walls of the tunnel, gently fluctuating lights shine star-chart-like patterns of 18th century urbanism throughout the underpass.
Functionally the Tunnel joins both sides of the busy railway station, also linking to the platforms.
Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects have been working intensively on the redevelopment of the area. The first phase of the Tikkurila Commercial Centre and Station was completed back in 2015 which included the train station, bus terminal, offices, shopping centre and car parking.
